Prince Harry arrives in London after King Charles' cancer diagnosis Los Angeles Times

Nowadays, the house is known as one of the London homes of King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort, but the residence has a fascinating history of its own, and has undergone many a reinvention over the years. The house was built between 1825 and 1827 to a design by John Nash. It was commissioned by the Duke of Clarence, who in 1830 became King William IV of the United Kingdom (reigned 1830–1837). The British public wasn’t told that Charles’ grandfather, King George VI, had lung cancer before his death in February 1952 at the age of 56, and some historians have claimed that the king himself wasn’t told he was terminally ill. About an hour after Harry arrived, Charles and Queen Camilla were driven from their residence to nearby Buckingham Palace in a royal Bentley.

The residence was designed by John Nash next to St. James's Palace as a home for King George III's son—then Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence, soon to be King William IV—in the 19th century. The three-story stuccoed mansion was luxurious, to be sure, but far less resplendent than Nash's work on Buckingham Palace. Over the years, it has undergone much extensive remodelling and reconstruction, most notably after being heavily damaged in the Second World War by enemy bombing during The Blitz. Little remains of the original structure designed by John Nash.

The couple waved to tourists and well-wishers gathered outside the palace gates. They then traveled by helicopter to Sandringham, the monarch’s rural residence in eastern England. But the night before her wedding, the Queen Mother invited Diana to spend the night at Clarence House.

In May, The Sunday Times reported that Charles is planning to open up the royal palaces to the public for longer periods of the year when he becomes king. He is likely to open Clarence House “year-round”, according to the paper. Having taken such care in decorating their new house, the royal couple had every expectation of a long residence, but the early death of King George VI in 1952 changed that. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who was only 52, now needed to vacate Buckingham Palace and she was assigned Clarence House, a building she thought ‘loathsome’.

Over the years, they added their own touches to the building, some with the help of interior designer Robert Kime. "The major change has been in The Dining Room which has the unusual and striking bronze coving to the ceiling," Jones said. "The other thing that always strikes you when you are inside the house is how much the garden is present—many of the rooms look out into the garden and there is a sense of it almost like an extra room to the house." Until Charles's accession to the throne in September 2022, Clarence House held the offices for Camilla and Charles's Royal Household.

Clarence is blessed with two children a daughter Nicole Avant and a son Alexander Devore Avant. Charles departed from royal tradition with his openness about his prostate condition. For centuries Britain’s royal family remained tight-lipped about health matters. Her husband, Prince William, who is heir to the throne, also took time off to help look after her and the couple’s three children, but is due to preside over a ceremony at Windsor Castle and a charity dinner Wednesday. Royal officials announced Monday that the 75-year-old king has been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and is receiving treatment as an outpatient. King Charles III’s cancer was caught early and the monarch will “crack on” with his constitutional duties, Britain’s prime minister said Tuesday, as Prince Harry flew in from California for a rare visit with his father.

It was built in 1825–1827, adjacent to St James's Palace, for the royal Duke of Clarence, the future King William IV. Producer JAY-Z and director Jeymes Samuel also snapped plenty of photos with cast and crew before enjoying the screening and heading to the afterparty with celebrity guests including Dave Chappelle, Angela Bassett, Doja Cat, Kelly Rowland and more. There are no current plans to call on the “counsellors of state” — senior royals, including the queen and the heir to the throne — to deputize for the monarch on constitutional duties such as signing legislation and receiving ambassadors. William and Camilla are expected to take on extra public engagements during the king’s treatment.

Clarence House currently serves as the London residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.[2] It has been Charles's residence since 2003. From 1953 until 2002 it was home to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother,[3] and before her, it was the official home of her daughter, Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II. The biggest names in film and music popped out Friday night (Jan. 5) at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles for the premiere of upcoming film, The Book Of Clarence, starring LaKeith Stanfield. Charles took the throne intending to preside over a slimmer monarchy with fewer senior royals carrying out ceremonial public duties. But with Charles and Kate both temporarily sidelined, Harry self-exiled to California and Prince Andrew largely banished from view because of his association with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the royal “Firm” risks becoming severely overstretched. News of the king’s diagnosis comes as his daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, recovers from abdominal surgery that saw her hospitalized for about two weeks.

Clarence House is home to Charles, Camilla, and a collection of valuable art and antiques. Two bedroom suites were created and a nursery laid out; the house was rewired and central heating installed; there were new kitchens and a lift. Prince Philip requested a cinema in the basement and was prepared to bear the cost himself if the Treasury would not pay – he was saved from this by the cinema industry, which offered to present a screen, seats and projectors as a wedding gift. The Horse Corridor was part of the 1870s extension of Clarence House, and today pays tribute to the late Queen Mother's love of horses. Also worth noting is this fine late 17th century red and black lacquer secretaire.

Many of the items in the house reflect the style and interests of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who lived in Clarence House for five decades, from 1953 until her death in 2002. "Their Royal Highnesses love Clarence House and although they have made it their home with their own personal touches, The Queen Mother's legacy lives on and is evident throughout the house," says a Clarence House spokesperson. This portrait of her, by Augustus John, still hangs above the fireplace in The Dining Room. The Queen Mother's coat of arms combined the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom with the arms of her father, the Earl of Strathmore. The Royal coat of arms consists of three golden lions on a red background (for England), a red lion on a golden background (for Scotland), and a golden harp on a blue background (for Ireland).

At the far end of the Entrance Hall hangs The Queen Mother's Garter Banner.Garter Banners belong to Knights and Ladies of The Order of the Garter - the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain. Royal watchers worldwide can also tour the residence digitally, thanks to a virtual tour hosted by Google Arts and Culture. King William IV would continue living in Clarence House even after ascending the throne. After his death in 1837, his sister Princess Augusta moved in, until her death just three years later. Many of the pieces on display in Clarence House form part of The Queen Mother's collection, and are displayed according to her layout.

Clarence House was built for the Duke of Clarence, George III's third son. Once your booking is confirmed we will advise the nearest set down location.
